SWACHH BHARAT MISSION

The Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) launched on 2nd October, 2014 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India with the objectives to eradicate manual scavenging, effect behavioral change, scientific municipal solid waste management and overall improvement of the urban environment. Urban Development Department is the nodal department of the State for implementation of SBM and it is implemented in 19 ULBS of Nagaland through the Ministry of Housing & Urban affairs, Government of India. The Mission Directorate is assisted by Programme Management Unit (PMU) comprising of Awareness Campaign (IEC) Expert, Sanitation Expert and information Management (MIS) Expert. In Nagaland, 19 (nineteen) Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are covered under Swachh Bharat Mission.
Various components and target for the 5 (five) Years Mission period (2014-19) as below:

  • Individual Household toilets:
     Construction/conversion of individual toilets: 24401@ ₹4000/- per toilet.
  • Community toilets: 428 @ ₹26,400/- per toilet.
  • Solid Waste Management for all 19 ULBS.

IMPLEMENTATION STATUS:
As per the guidelines, the funds are distributed to the Municipal and Town Councils who are the actual implementing agencies. As per the ULBs’ report status, the achievements are as indicated below:

  • Conversion/renovation of 9300 new toilet units are completed
  • .
  • 6715 individual toilets under program.
  • 235 units of community toilets completed.
  • 51 nos of Waste Disposal machineries are procured and in use.
  • All the 19 Municipal and Town Councils are declared as ‘Open Defecation Free’.

AWARENESS PROGRAM & CLEANLINESS DRIVES:
The Ministry has issued calendar for various thematic drives. Accordingly, the Mission Directorate through the Municipal and Town Councils have taken up the following activities:
i. Cleanliness drive in all educational institutions, painting/ Essay competitions in selected colleges/Polytechnic Colleges.
ii. Cleanliness drive in hospitals and medical institutions.
iii. Cleanliness drive for urban water bodies.
iv. Cleanliness drive for market places.
v. Cleanliness drive for parks/ open spaces.
vi. Cleanliness drive for public offices.
vii. Cleanliness drive in residential colonies.

OTHER MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES:
In addition to the above mandatory activities, the Mission Directorate has also taken up various awareness programmes, some of which are shown below:
i. Awareness campaign to Sunday School Children.
ii. Awareness campaign in selected school(s).
iii. Translation of SBM pledge.
iv. Awareness through Hoardings, SBM Pledge Boards, handouts/stickers/book marks.
v. News bulletin in collaboration with Save Environment Network group.
vi. Video clippings/short film in collaboration with Rain Drops Entertainment and Dreamz Unlimited Production.
